Ok, maybe I'm missing something, but lets say you've got
your modem working on your linux box, and it works fine
under Linux, so what you're trying to do is use your, say,
Windows machine to access the net through the modem
on your linux server?

Are you using Socks5? and Squid?
Have you changed your preferences to use a manual proxy
configuration of say:
            IP of server Port number
httpd: 192.168.1.1 3128

You can also use something like mserver to launch your
connection from your winx desktop, instead of having
to telnet to your linux box and typing ifup ppp0 and ifdown ppp0
all the time.
