From bogus@does.not.exist.com Sun Nov 30 09:28:17 2003 From: bogus@does.not.exist.com () Date: Sun Nov 30 09:28:16 2003 Subject: No subject Message-ID: and carrying onto the main gates to UCL, which will be on your left hand side, a three minute walk at most. These gates lead into a courtyard, at the far right hand side of which are doors that will lead you to the Eisai Lounge. It's much easier than I've made it sound and for reassurance, just ask the guys in the security in the gate house. If you are coming by car, speak to the guys in the security hut, they will give you advice on the best place to park at that moment. If you are bringing equipment they should be able to find you somewhere to park in the courtyard or allow you to unload at least. ******************** Please email if you are going to bring your equipment. Since we won't have access to onsite monitors you will need to bring your own displays if at all possible. If this causes problems then email monitor request and I will try to arrange for someone to bring a spare. You will also need to bring your own extension cables and multiway adapters, ideally labelled with your name, after all, no one wants to see a fight at closing time over a =A35 bit of wire ;-) It's going to be a very busy meet, so you really will need to be there on time. I understand that John Winters will also be with us again with samples from his Linux Emporium http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/, so you've all got the chance to spend some money. *** The days events. Tigran Aivazian will do a talk on Linux device driver for Intel IA32 Processors micro code update; Simon Trimmer will do a talk on Wine, VMWare and Win4L. Richard Jones will do a talk on Net::FTPServer, a full featured, secure, extensible and configurable FTP server with a database back end, written in perl. I know that we will have a few people doing installs, so the newest of the newbies can be shown the ropes. If you are looking to install Linux on a system that you are bringing make sure that you are prepared to sacrifice all of the data on the hard disk, back-up your important stuff, etc. The meeting will need to end promptly at 5pm, so waste no time. *** After the meeting. But it would be a shame for the day to end there and I'm sure you'll all be thirsty from talking so, after the meeting we will move off to 'The Playing Fields' bar , 143 Whitfield Street, which is a short walk away from the University. From the university gates turn right - towards Euston Road, the first left into Grafton Way, continue across Tottenham Court Road then right into Whitfield Street. Look out for the chalk board sign on the left hand side of Whitfield Street for The Playing Fields. -- Colin Murphy - QL.4.Ever@bigfoot.com - ICQ# 13630409 A GLLUG Greater London Linux User Group organiser http://gllug.linux.co.uk From gllugadmin at linux.co.uk Thu Jan 9 12:47:16 2003 From: gllugadmin at linux.co.uk (GLLUG Organiser) Date: Sun Nov 30 09:28:18 2003 Subject: [Gllug-announce] Next GLLUG Meeting Saturday 18th January 2003 Message-ID: <200301091247.16335.gllugadmin@linux.co.uk> [apologies for the delay in sending this out. There are building works at the moment but we'll post signs if the entrance has moved. This event is FREE to members and non-members alike, if you want to join GLLUG, sign on to the gllug-announce mailing list, detailed at the end of this email. Talks We have two main talks planned. These will be in the large lecture theatre on the second floor:- 12:00 - 12:30 Welcome and Introduction. Also the opportunity to try and beat the projectors into submission! :-) 12:30 - 14:00 Lene Jensen - Linux Training and Certification Lene works for RedHat. She'll start talking a bit about their curriculum, the RHCE track, but also their additional courses. Then going through the two certifications they have, RHCT and RHCE, and then questions. 14:30 - 16:00 Richard Cohen - Introduction to the Shell Aimed at people who are either new to Linux, or who have spent most of their time in graphical environments. An attempt to introduce people to the richness and power of the Linux and Unix shell, and some of the more useful standard tools. Lots of examples, both useful and silly. 16:15 - 17:00 To round the meeting off: There will be an open forum discussion, where people can come to the front of the lecture hall, and give little "shortie" presentations on topics of interest to the group, including the continuing feature of the "Heckle Steve Session". * Do please be aware that we can't guarantee that the talks will happen at the times stated, but we will do our best to make sure they do. Other activities Away from the formal lectures, we have two rooms set aside, both on the second floor, same level as main lecture room. The network lab, as it is known, can be used for rolling demos of Linux being installations and to experiment with configuration. We also have the Multimedia room. If your are bringing in your own machine, make sure you sign it in when you arrive, otherwise security won't let you take it when you go! We will have access to some of the latest iso images and a CD-Burner. If you decide to bring a PC, please have the serial number written down ahead of time, in case it needs to be registered at the ground floor Reception. We may also take a picture of you and your PC as proof of ownership.
